Picking my 100 favorite films was hard enough. Ranking them? Impossible.
Therefore I'll be presenting them in alphabetical order. Also, very important to note...quoting the amazing Priscilla Page -
"...first and foremost, I never intend for this list to be an objective, declarative statement on film... I just want to share what I loved, what moved me, what helped me, what was fun to watch — in short, the movies I want other people to get their eyeballs on if they haven’t already."
Jaws (1976)
 |
In general I'm not much of a Spielberg fan. That said, there's no denying how terrific JAWS is. Top level filmmaking. |
JFK (1991)
 |
Is it 100% historically accurate? No. Does he (Oliver Stone) mix actual footage with reenactments? Yes. But this isn't a documentary and was never intended to be one. Oliver Stone deftly takes several credible theories about the JFK assassination and weaves them together into a visceral and engaging film. His point wasn't to answer what happened in Dallas that day so much as to point out that what we've been told happened that day is very likely bullshit. |
The King of Comedy (1982)
 |
Not the first "obessed fan" movie, but certainly one of the greatest. Scorsese and De Niro. You wouldn't really need any more reason to see this, but what if I told you Jerry Lewis is terrific in the "straight"role of the late night talk show host? He is. |
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
 |
I knew from the Saul Bass inspired opening credits that I was going to love this movie - and it didn't disappoint. RDJ and Val Kilmer are prefect together. Rarely have two stars had such chemistry. Had this film made more than six bucks at the box office we could have looked forward to a whole franchise. Alas, it bombed and we have only this singular gem to enjoy. Watch it. Love it. Watch it again. |
L.A. Confidential (1997)
 |
James Ellroy novels beg to be made into films. None will ever top L.A. Confidential. It's a masterpiece of LA noir/crime cinema. With two (at the time unknown) Aussie leads (Russell Crow and Guy Pierce) and a supporting cast including Kevin Spacey, Danny Devito, Kim Bassinger, James Cromwell it's busting at the gills with talent in front of the camera. Behind the camera? Curtis Hanson directs with DP Dante Spinotti. Score by Jerry Goldsmith. From a technical standpoint it's absolutely perfect. It's rare to have something that technically perfect also be engaging and entertaining, but LA Confidential is. #OffTheRecordOntheQTHushHush |
