100 Favorite Films - Miller's Crossing to Night of the Hunter

Picking my 100 favorite films was hard enough.  Ranking them?  Impossible.

Therefore I'll be presenting them in alphabetical order.  Also, very important to note...quoting the amazing Priscilla Page -

"...first and foremost, I never intend for this list to be an objective, declarative statement on film... I just want to share what I loved, what moved me, what helped me, what was fun to watch — in short, the movies I want other people to get their eyeballs on if they haven’t already."

Miller's Crossing (1990)

I LOVE period crime/gangster films.  This is certainly one of the very best.  It's also the film that gave me the name of my first film restoration company (High Hat Post).

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

If you've avoided seeing this it's probably because like me, you saw the trailer and just thought "ugg...a thousand year old man training a female boxer?  Pass."  Well let me tell you, you're missing out.  My love of Clint Eastwood as a filmmaker was enough to get me to watch this film and I'm so glad I did.  Some will call it an "issue" film - and that may be fair.  But it's an important issue (I'll let you watch it and find out what issue on your own like I did.) The script, performances and direction all all top notch.  Bring tissues.

The Mummy (1959)

Christoper Lee and Hammer Films were in top form in 1959.  This is a tale that's been told many times, but I don't think ever as well as in this production.  Superb! For the longest time these Hammer Studios classics were not available on blu-ray.  Thankfully most of them are now - including this gem.

Network (1976)

Meant to be satire, Paddy Chayefsky's NETWORK has sadly proven to be rather prophetic. This is must-see cinema.

Night of the Hunter (1955)

Another one of those films that I like to show folks that say they don't like "old movies". It typically blows them away.  This is one of those Criterion Collection titles that should be on your shelf
